Modality change request

FOU 120 – 2D Form and Surface

Proposed course structure: Blended, with roughly 5 classes held remotely

A clear rationale for the proposed change: Teaching in a blended modality is integral for the success of this course. The assignments require that students to work fluidly between digital and analog ways of making. Gaining both hand skills and teaching them valuable skills as a freshmen that they will carry into their majors.

There will be 5 days of digital instruction. Those days will be digital heavy days where the content will be best delivered in a virtual environment that allows students to pause and rewatch video. Being blended will enhance the experience of the class and will also allow for social distancing. Most critiques of work are done by projecting visuals and playing sound on a screen for everyone to discuss. These reviews can also occur in a virtual space and allow for well documented, asynchronous feedback as well.

Evidence of student demand for the proposed change in the context of historical course enrollment (e.g., interested students as a share of historical course enrollment, wait lists etc)

I have received requests for a fully remote version. I have explained to students that there will be some in person requirements, but that I would work with them to best accommodate their needs.

A clear plan for accommodating any students displaced by the change: For students who want more remote days, much of the instruction is already created as video tutorials, such as a walk through of their tool kit, knife safety when cutting and making templates and sketchbooks.

For students wanting more in person instruction, I will be on campus to assist them. There will also be options to take on more hands on rolls in the course, for example using the silkscreen studio to print design created in the course.

A strategy for responding to any subsequent changes in student preferences within the constraints of your available instructional resources: If there are students that do not want to meet remote for the 5 days, I will work with them to have them work in the classroom those days and work with their classmates.

Proposed course structure: Blended with roughly 5-7 classes held remotely, and with a fully remote option

A clear rationale for the proposed change: The course is on intermediate to advanced projects that require lots long video tutorials and large amounts of work time to execute. This content is best delivered in a virtual environment that allows students to pause and rewatch video. Being blended will enhance the classroom experience class and allow for social distancing.
The 5Critiques of work are done by projecting visuals and playing audio for everyone to discuss. These reviews can also occur in a virtual space and allow for asynchronous reviews of work as well.

Evidence of student demand for the proposed change in the context of historical course enrollment (e.g., interested students as a share of historical course enrollment, wait lists etc): This course has one student on the official waitlist and five others who want to take it. A large part of that is because I have told students that it will be blended with a remote option.

A strategy for responding to any subsequent changes in student preferences within the constraints of your available instructional resources: If there are students that do not want to meet remote for the 5 – 7 days, I will work with them to have them in the classroom those days and work with their classmates.
